User Guide

Poter is a privacy-first, decentralized tool: downloads, chat, notes and site publishing all happen on your own device. This guide is organized by feature — use the search box at the top left to jump straight to a topic.

Getting Started

Grab the package for your platform from the download page. Current beta: Apple Silicon .dmg for macOS (macOS 12 or later), .AppImage or .deb for Linux (x64), and .exe for Windows (Windows 10 1809 or later, when a build is published).

Identity & Multiple Devices

Your identity itself is a BIP-39 recovery phrase (12 words). Poter uses it to sign device certificates, encrypt and address, all without a server.

Downloads

Click New task and paste your link. A badge under the box shows the detected type (direct link / torrent / P2P) — confirm it, then click Start download.

Files

Files holds the files you personally have. They are content-addressed: the same content always gets the same address, so whoever receives it can verify it was not altered.

Chat & Voice

Chat in Poter is peer-to-peer: messages travel straight from your device to theirs, with no chat server in between. Click the Add friend icon at the top of the conversation list — the dialog offers four routes.

deWeb Sites

deWeb lets you publish a site onto the peer-to-peer network instead of onto a server. The content is stored by address, and a pointer signed by you points at it.

Notes

New creates a note, a journal entry or a long-form piece (novel, comic); you can also create folders first and file things into them.

Discover

The page has two tabs: the site list and My subscriptions. Filter by category, sort by Newest or Trending, or search for a site by name.

Settings & Troubleshooting

Settings runs top to bottom as: network, identity, downloads, appearance, notifications, updates, language, account, data, wallet, help.

Each chapter is its own page, so you can open or share it directly.
